What’s better… water or Gatorade?
Both of these fluids can help an athlete stay hydrated, which is crucial for good performance. Even slight dehydration has a negative effect on your body’s function and performance, including cramping, inability to focus, fatigue and increased risk for heat illness. Athletes typically don’t drink enough to keep the body hydrated. Water tends to quench our thirst before we’re fully rehydrated. Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, have flavor, and therefore athletes tend to drink more and stay better hydrated. Gatorade can also act as a fuel source, keeping the muscles and brain energized.
