It’s a film that captures two worlds soccer, which is the national sport in Britain and marriage, which is a full-time obsession with us Indians. It’s the story of a young Indian girl who lives in London, and wants to be a professional soccer player. And as you know, it never is easy for an Indian girl in any part of the world. Jess (the heroine here) finds it tough to realize her dream in her marriage-obsessed society. How her parents come around to her way of thinking is what Bend It Like Beckham is all about. How close is the film to your life? It’s a mixture I would say. I never played football that’s for sure. The father figure in the film played by Anupam Kher is based on my father. Like him, my father was very supportive of my dreams and choice of profession. He was a feminist in a way, and never approved of the way women were treated or expected to behave in our society.
