Whats been your contribution in getting the Indian gharial back from the brink of extinction?
Many animal welfare organisations have worked to save this particular species from becoming extinct. The credit also goes to several people before my time. Herpetologist Brady Bar and I have worked to release a few gharials back into the wild. Despite the laws, this species continue to be threatened by a dramatic increase in gharial trade over the last decade. Even more than the trade, however, the danger has increasingly come from human encroachment on the habitats of these animals, leaving them with very little to survive on. Can you tell us something about your new project — of inventorying the reptile diversity in the Western Ghats of Karnataka? Rom and I have always wanted to undertake an extensive inventorying of reptiles in the Western Ghats, a place that is very dear to both of us.
