Australia’s currency was originally the Australian Pound (tied until the 1930s to the value of the British Pound), but they launched a new currency, the Australian Dollar, in the 1960s which remains in use today. The symbol is $ and the abbreviation is AUD. It isn’t connected in any way to the American dollar, the only thing they have in common is the name. One American dollar is worth 1.54 Australian dollars at todays rates. As for kangaroos and dingos, unlike Canadian dollar coins (known as “loonies” and “toonies” for the $1 and $2 respectively), the Australian money doesn’t have any nicknames relating to local wildlife. And people in Australia don’t all go round saying “crikey matey” like Crocodile Dundee, Barry McKenzie, or Steve Irwin. (note: Steve Irwin is dead, and the other two are fictional characters.) Anyway, the dollar was originally a Spanish and Mexican currency in the 1700s (and not adopted by the U.S. until 1785), so let’s have none of this “LOL it’s American money huh!

Australian currency is the dollar. And no it isn’t american money. We have our own denominations and sizes, shapes etc We have a $100 note, a $50 note, a $20 note, a $10 note, a $5 note, a $2 and a $1 coin, a 50 cent coin, a 20 cent coin, a ten cent coin and a five cent coin. There are no 2 or 1 cent coins now but there was. We round our cents up or down so $1.99 is charged as $2 and $1.92 is charged as $1.90. We have kangaroos on our $1 coin but they aren’t known as any special name. You don’t seem to like Australia much. That is a shame as it is a lovely country. I am married to an American and we are living in Australia now after being in Florida. He hasn’t had any anti-Americanism but then he doesn’t have an attitude or treat us like we are morons like some seem to. And for your enlightenment not only America has the dollar as its currency…so we didn’t get it from you. Google our currency…you might like the look of it. It is very colourful and quite unique I think.
