Whats at the Root of Anti-Globalization?
INTERVIEWER: There’s a lot of anxiety that you hear around the world about globalization. Where is that coming from, and what does it mean? LAURA TYSON: You know, I have to confess that I find it a bit mysterious. I came back from Washington in early ’97 before the global financial crises of Asia. I came to Berkeley, and one of the first things I saw was a poster for a big anti-globalization rally at Berkeley, which actually turns out to be one of the capitals of anti-globalization forces. So I kind of looked at this poster, and I said, “I don’t understand why people are concerned. What is the concern here?” I feel that while the issue of global environmental standards is a very important issue to me, I think I’m also very concerned about global warming. I think we should be doing more. I think there are huge moral questions about how companies should behave when they’re in a foreign location.
