Whats an oceanographer doing in Ohio?
It’s true, I am a “real” oceanographer living in a non-marine state. Most of my work uses data from satellites that orbit the Earth, thus I can do my research with only a computer and a good internet connection! Even my seagoing colleagues (including those at Kent State) have field sites all around the globe, not just in coastal areas off the United States. These individuals usually must fly to meet research ships, no matter where they live (and, for that purpose, Cleveland International Airport works just as well as Boston, San Diego, or Seattle!). For the record, this isn’t the first non-marine state I’ve lived in as an oceanographer (Colorado was the first); I’ve also lived on both the East and West Coasts of the United States.
