Whats an example of some radical new thinking in sports design in Australia?
We have put together I think a very, very good series of venues for the Olympics. I think the Australian design industry should be applauded for really producing world class venues, using minimal expenditure to both the government and to the private sector. However, it has not seen a great step forward, it’s seen very good deployment of existing technology, rather than anything radical. So a more conservative approach has been taken there? There are two things you can see which are new: the exhibition halls, which will be the secondary Olympic indoor facilities. Enormous timber roofs which will be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, using plantation pine as an environmentally friendly renewable resource, but by glue-laminating them into large enough elements and using sophisticated computer analysis and modelling techniques, we’ve made them span 100 metres in the case of the dome, or 70 metres for the halls. The other one would be the roofing on the main stadium, which is a polycar
