I’m always a bit bemused that people are surprised to find that royalty is of mixed blood. Royal families intermarry with other royal families, and pure undiluted ‘Britishness’ has never been the criteria for someone inheriting the throne (indeed few people in this country can possibly be ‘pure’ anything, since many different people have settled here). Every monarch in this country has been born and raised here going back to George III, and I really think that the fact that they have German ancestry is neither here nor there. I doubt if there is any royal family anywhere that doesn’t have a great deal of foreign blood in them, that’s the nature of royalty.
