Whats a tried and tested, effective marathon training schedule?

If you are a beginner marathon runner, take a look around the net at different training schedules. I used the Hal Higdon beginner schedule for my first marathon. It worked fine for me and is a popular schedule for first time marathon runners. It does not really matter which schedule you use though– just look for something that suits your time frame, has at least 2 rest days per week and does not increase in weekly mileage every single week (a step-back week every 2-3 weeks is usually the best option). Most schedules also feature a long run which is pretty standard. If you are a more experienced runner I would suggest customising a schedule to what you feel is best (or even creating your own from scratch). Since every runner is different, a single schedule can not be beneficial for every runner.
