Whats a good way to measure Hard Disk Performance under Linux?
Please refer to Part C of the December 2001 Linux Application Notes available for download from the Linux User Guides Section. There is a document in that section, Document 12/14/2001 Ver 0.8) A Simple Method to Measuring Hard Disk Performance Under Linux: Red Hat 7.2/7.1, SuSE 7.3, and Mandrake 8.1. A hard disk may fail to operate at its maximally permissible transfer speed in some cases. As a result, these cases may require re-building the kernel to enhance the disk performance. This document reports test results covering three south bridge chips with or without kernel rebuild.
