There’s no simple answer. Some artists prefer to start with grey and build it up (with the very delicate shading in the glaze this can look beautiful). Some will go for a compliment, so raw umber-like browns and yellows perhaps. I often go for something like the final colour but duller and a slightly different hue, so perhaps a blue, perhaps a red for a violet flower. I like oxide of chromium and yellow ochre for underpainting floral greens.
