Whats a good guitar to get?
Buy something you have tried is sound advice. The best buy for somebody not sure of what kind of guitar they want would probably be a Squier Telecaster: Affordable, easy to play, very versatile sounds and very tough. if you want a little more edge to the sound and style to the look, a Squier Stratocaster is also a good buy. PRS do some relatively cheap guitars based on older Gibsons, but with a modern shape, that are nice, and Ibanez do Fender-like, but heavier sounding guitars. Les Pauls sound wonderful, even the best of the Chinese Epiphones like the one in my profile picture, but they are very chunky and heavy in feel, so I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who doesn’t seriously want one.
If you can afford it, you can try and get a guitar similar to a guitar from a band you like (you have to take in mind that they will have a lot of guitars and have to figure out in what parts of their music they are used and if you like to have that particular sound). I have an ESP LTD Kirk Hammett-2 for this reason and it is still one of my favourite guitars. I also have a Gibson Les Paul, because I one day went over to a guitar centre for a good guitar and tried out a bunch of guitars and this one sounded best with my gear and style of playing, so don’t be afraid to try out a few guitars in this fashion before committing to one of them. It’s better you hear and feel it yourself than judge solely on the sound of others and get it from the internet. You’ll also have a more personal bond to it that way right from the start and will care for it better.
