Whats a display quote (or an indented quote) and how do I punctuate it?
A display or an indented quote is a long quote–over 100 words or four lines of type, whichever measure you prefer. When you have a long quote you need to indent or display it rather than run it straight into the text of your paper. The keys to inserting and punctuating a display quote are the following: –Indent ten spaces from the margin. –Double space. –Do not use quotation marks. –Punctuate before the parenthetical citation. For example: More and more athletes are suffering repeated concussions, yet they refuse to take them seriously. Steve Wilde, as sportswriter Kathleen Noonan points out, is a prime example: After suffering his fourth concussion in three years, Wilde has been urged by family and friends to retire from professional football. But despite continuing dizziness, blurred vision, and periods of forgetfulness, Wilde seems determined to play again, maybe even this year.
