Whats a Discussion Topic?
Topics are separate forums within the Discussions tool that group related messages. Three types of discussion topics are available: Threaded, Blogs and Journals. Threaded topics are the most common, they are used for structured discussions and organize messages into threads that can be expanded and collapsed. Blogs are used for casual discussion where messages are organized seperately and chronologically. Journal topics are usually used for private discussion and self reflection. All Discussion topics can be organized into Categories depending on the content being discussed. They can be public (available to all class members) or private (available to an instructor-selected group of class members). If you have access to a private topic, you will see it listed.

If you have access to a private topic, you will see it listed. (It will be clearly marked as private.) To access a specific topic, click on the hyperlinked topic title. To determine what topic you are currently in, check the first text line of the top frame. It should read “Discussion Messages: Topic Name”. That indicates the name of the topic that you’re in.

I can’t open or post Discussion messages. Performing the following checks and fixes may correct this problem: Make sure you have done all the browser checks and settings listed at the WebCT Browser Tune-up. Make sure you do not have any pop-up window killers running on your computer. If your pop-up killer supports custom lists, include the address of your institution’s WebCT server as a valid site.
