When I teach grammar in a college english course, I usually do it as a mini-lesson within a larger lesson after some writing has been done by the students. I use their mistakes as examples for the class. Usually I’ll pick something that many people are having problems with. For instance, pronoun usage is usually a topic that I have to review because many people like to use a singular subject with a plural pronoun. “The student lost their book.” It’s unfortunately common practice because English does not have gender suffixes like other language, because everyone likes to be politically correct, and the he/she usage is awkward, many students use the plural when a singular is needed. I can present the information, show examples of students work and/or use a worksheet to further the lesson. I’m not overly fond of the worksheet drill and kill method but have been known to use it on occasion. I think this is pretty typical for grammar usage if the class isn’t a remedial class.
