What Year Were Colchester United Formed In?
Colchester United formed in 1937. This is considered quite a modern football club in comparison to many clubs that were founded in the late 1800s, with the Football League forming in 1888. However, the reason that Colchester United took a while to get off the ground, is because the town had previously had a team named Colchester Town FC. This team was formed in 1867 as an amateur side and was known as the ‘Oystermen’. They disbanded in 1937 after briefly sharing their ground of Layer Road with the newer Colchester United. Layer Road currently has a capacity of just over 6,000 seats. Colchester United have always been a lower-league side, throughout their existence, until the successful season of 2005/06 saw them finishing second in the League One table. This triumph earned them automatic promotion to the Championship. The team play in blue shirts with white stripes and blue shorts.
