What year did the British begin ruling India?
The British rule actually began following the Mutiny of 1857. Prior to that, the British parts had been administered by the East India Company. And remember, Britain never ruled the whole of India. Many areas were governed by ‘native’ princes, overseen, I accept, by the British. It was in 1857 that Victoria was pronounced Empress of India. Empress because there were, as I have said, many ‘native’ rulers.
