What year did Chile gain its independence?
A civil war occurred around 1891 and Chile had an unstable government. A constitutional government was set but many citizens were convinced that socialism might solve their problems. Salvador Allende became president of Chile but his policies did not help the country. So in 1973, General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte led a military coup and he became the socialist leader. Pinochet did succeed in improving Chile’s economy but was brutal to some of the citizens. Pinochet was defeated by Patricio Aylwin Azocar who became president in 1990. Aylwin helped increase Chile’s strength in South America.
