What year did cayman island gain independence?
The Cayman Islands have no wish to gain independence and are happy and prosperous as a British Overseas Territory. It is largely their connection with the UK which has enabled them to be a major financial centre — the fifth largest in the world. The flag of the Cayman Islands contains the Union Flag. The Islands have been a British possession since the 1670s and were a dependency of Jamaica until July 1959, with the setting up of the Federation of the West Indies (which Jamaica left on becaming independent). They became first a separate colony and later a British overseas territory. This means that while they have their own legislative assembly, there is a Governor in post appointed by the British government with a duty to oversee the overall running of things, including the approval of legislation and immigration matters on behalf of the Crown.
