What wound healing characteristics have been demonstrated by Sodium Hyaluronate?
Pre-clinical and in vitro studies have demonstrated that sodium hyaluronate functions are mainly related to angiogenesis and cell differentiation. HY was shown to promote healing and reduce scar formation in skin incision wounds (Chen & Abatangelo, 1999; Hu, et al., 2003; West & Kumar, 1989). Also, HY has been demonstrated to accelerate new bone formation via mesenchymal cell differentiation (Huang et al., 2003; Sasaki & Watanabe, 1995; Toole & Gross, 1971) and is believed to facilitate mineralization of the calcifying matrix (Boskey et al., 1991). HY has also been demonstrated to stimulate bone marrow stromal cell proliferation and bone formation (Zou et al., 2004).
