What would the Privy Council be?
It would be on the same standing as the Franks Committee into the Falklands. Some people say a committee of MPs but we say a committee of Privy Councillors because then you can include senior retired people from the military and diplomatic service, people who actually know what they are looking for and what they are talking about. That would make a more powerful committee and I think it’s vital for the credibility of future Governments, whoever wins the next election. We need to know people in Britain will believe the Government when we say something about intelligence. I think the way things have been left after Iraq is that people won’t believe the Government of the day, so they have to know that lessons have been learnt and that all political parties and people, whether they were for or against the invasion of Iraq, have learnt lessons.
