What would surprise Americans visiting Scotland for the first time?
JH: Roundabouts (traffic circles). Most Americans have never seen them and don’t have a clue how to maneuver around them. Tom Callahan (an American sportswriter and author) says that every time he comes to Scotland he meets the friendliest people in the world by colliding with them in a roundabout. DW: What else? JH: The weather is a lot better than most people think. They watch the Open Championship on television and the announcers keep blathering on about the Scottish weather. In fact, I think our weather is a lot better for golf than the weather in Connecticut, where I used to live. The Gulf Stream channels temperate weather our way. I mean, there are palm trees growing on the west coast of Scotland. We don’t have the extremes of weather that I found in the northeastern United States.
