What would rabbits do before they give birth?
You often find when a rabbit becomes a first time mother the litter doesn’t last, as the female isn’t used to nurturing and so rejects the litter. If it happens again, she will gain in size and if you GENTLY press on the stomach, you may be able to feel the babies moving. Towards the end of the pregnancy she will begin to “nest” where she will pull her own fur out in her chosen birthing room and create a furry nest for the new arrivals. Also, her teats will begin to swell. On average, a rabbit pregnancy lasts 28 days, but none of my does ever gave birth on time, just give them some alone time (stress doesn’t help the birth) and feed her whenever she needs it (a pregnant mother or a rabbit with babies will eat 2 to 3 times more food than normal), making sure the nest is untouched and clean. And when the babies arrive, don’t handle them straight away, let the mother get her bearings and begin to suckle.
