The way to approach this question is to think about the temperature change during a typical day. For instance, consider a spring day in northern California. The high might be about 65 F, and the low about 45 F. (Other parts of the country will have different temperatures, but let’s stick with this example.) In the early spring, the sun is up for about 12 hours and down for about 12 hours. In the above example, as the sun sets and disappears for the night, the temperature drops about 20 degrees. That’s the important number here: In 12 hours, the temperature drops 20 degrees (give or take a bit). Lets suppose the sun “turns off” at 12:01 AM Monday morning. We have temperatures like the following: Sunday afternoon: 65 Monday 6 AM: 45 (the normal overnight drop) But now, from 6 AM to 6 PM Monday, the sun will not appear; so instead of warming 20 degrees, the earth will cool 20 degrees.
