Depending on exactly what the interview is for I’m kinda assuming its for a course at that uni, but yeah in general they (whoever is interviewing you) wants to see what your capable of and what your current talent level is. So yeah graphic design from what i understand is about “visual communication by a skillful combination of text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, books, etc.” so perhaps if you have done some product designs or packaging in the past include that and yeah just sketch up some more have a wide variety of different examples and styles to show your skill in the area.

They don’t necessarily need to see great works of Graphic Design (why would you be going to school if you were already an expert). Any type of art work (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography) will be of interest to them. They want to see that you are creative and have a sincere interest in artistic fields. If you are starting from scratch and not taking any art classes right now then just start drawing. Draw what you see around you. Create a series of seeing the same object in different views. Make collages and incorporate your own drawing and painting. Just create as much as possible. Then as you get closer to the interview ask friends, teachers or anyone to take a look and help you pick out 10-15 of your best pieces. I went to college and got my BFA with a concentration in Expanded Media (graphic design, printmaking, etc) and the pieces that stood out the most during portfolio reviews was figure drawings I had done. It just goes to show you they aren’t looking for any particular

Don’t worry about it. Not all highschools are created equal, and because of that, incoming college students can’t be held to the same standard of artistic development during an interview. Most of the time what they do is start you of with a whole semester of studio art courses (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, etc) and then decide whether or not to let you into the actual design program based on your development and the quality of the work you do in those classes. If the interview was anything like mine, they’ll just ask you questions like, why do you want to go into design, what’s your favorite font, favorite designer…..you know, just gauging if you’re really serious about it.

What is your question?

*Sadly, we had to bring back ads too. Hopefully more targeted.
