What would happen to the San Andreas Fault?
The San Andreas fault is one of a family of parallel fault lines that form the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. Other faults in this system include the Hayward and Calavaras faults in the San Francisco Bay area. The Pacific plate is moving northward relative to the North American plate. Shifting on this boundary system has been happening for millions of years, and it is still happening. California will not sink or break away from North America following an earthquake. It will just shake a lot near the epicenter of the quake.
