What would happen to the military if Britain removed its monarchy?
According to British laws (Promissory Oaths Act 1868) the military not only swear an oath to the queen of England, but also to “her heirs and successors, according to law”. Thus the military would serve whoever succeeded the queen as the head of state. This would either be the Prime Minister, if they took on the role of head of state, or a newly created role of president. I cannot say if there would be a mass exodus, possibly because it might be the military itself that removed the monarch. I don’t think that most rank and file soldiers would be all that concerned. Though the officers might be. Personally, I cannot see Cameron or Clegg wanting the military to swear allegiance to them. They want to be seen as civilians, not as military men.
