What would happen to the earth if anything if the moon drifted away?
The Moon is drifting away from the Earth at about 1.5 inches (3.74 cm) a year. As it does so it slows down the rotation of the Earth. In 100 years, a day will be 2 milliseconds longer than it is now. Also as the Moon drifts away tides will gradually become less and less noticeable as well. At some point in the distant future (billions of years from now) the Earth and the Moon will part ways. Obviously, these changes are occurring so slowly, there will be no dramatic changes here on Earth.
