What would happen if we let all refugees into Australia?
I’m personally pro-refugee, but if you mean from Australia’s point of view… 1. The numbers of refugees coming to Australia would shoot up as the deterrent of compulsory detention is removed 2. Wages would be driven down as the labour supply expands 3. Racism among those already in Australia would surge up, as the rapid immigration of large numbers makes integration more difficult, and there would be a perception that “migrants are taking Aussie jobs”… Etc, etc. I think we have a moral imperative to take in refugees that outweighs these issues, but how to prevent these consequences (in particular the third one) has to be addressed.
