What would happen if we did not have the doctrine of precedent within the English legal system?

Without precedent, fairness would be a distant word. Every person would be treated differently and the outcome would shamble the English legal system. Precedent is required to ensure fairness across the board!

precedent and case law are joint contributors to fairness across the legal system. precedent sets law for future cases to work within. The famous case of Donogue v stephenson whereby our current consumer law eminates as well as “duty to our neighbour” as in anything we do we have a duty to consider the safety of others. This precedent has affected virtually all future cases. Look it up for greater detail. A simple case yet changed the law and our behavioural duty beyond recognition.

Well, I personally have set a precedent of not doing anyone else’s homework – so I am afraid I must follow precedent and not tell you. You may actually be able to cull an answer from that if you think it through.
