The men were often forced to work in the elements such as extreme heat and cold. They were fed and watered at the guard’s leisure. The guards were often cruel men who hated black people. They had the power to beat them and harm them if they chose to. If a black person was truly hated by a guard he could be accused of trying to cause a stir or run and be shot.
