Different plants need different amounts of water. Marigolds are useful in the garden because they can manage with very little water in sunny conditions, but this does mean they are not keen on too much. They will not flower so well if over-watered as they will grow too many lush leaves instead of flowers. If you really swamp them with no chance to drain the soil, the soil becomes waterlogged (ie there’s no air in the spaces between the granules of soil) the roots will die from lack of air. First thing you will notice is that the plant appears to be wilting. At this point some people give more water, thinking the plant is thirsty, but it’s not, it’s drowning.
