If a comet hit Mars a major impact force would cause a huge crater (at least) and potentially huge amounts of damage that would reshape the surface nera where the comet hits. Meteorites and asteroids have certainly impacted Mars in the past. We see evidence of this all aorund — the craters. In fact the Spirit rovre has actually landed in a huge cratre on Mars. Within that crater, there are a number of smaller impact craters even in view from where Spirit now sits on he surface.
