What would cause water to leak out of coolant tank after shutting engine off?

My guess would be that the radiator cap is bad. It is spring loaded and if the spring get week, the inner part of the cap will open and allow water to run out into the overflow container. This can happen after car is shut off because there is no more cooling available and then the coolant begins to expand more from the heat.
