Once in a while you can download a version of AVG 8.5 that will have a corrupt file or missing file in it, which will cause it not to update as it should. Best thing to do is, uninstall the version you have and reboot and install fresh copy and reset every thing in AVG. Another reason could be that a virus has disabled some of the components, but I should have thought that unlikely and probably there is a safeguard built into the software to prevent that from happening. Check in Administrative Tools that the service(s) for it are set to automatic and are running, and check in event viewer to see if there are any messages in applications and system view. Might give you a clue… Check you have it checked for startup in Configuration Utitily (msconfig) as well. Press R and the Windows key to bring up the Run box and type msconfig in and OK then click on Startup tab to see that.
