What would cause a dog to have blood in its stool?
The above posters are all correct. It’s not good, no matter what the cause. Worms are one possibility, but please do not get the over-the-counter wormer at Walmart etc. It can be deadly and may not be effective. Worming meds are usually inexpensive at a vet’s office. There are other causes that can be very severe. I’ve had a puppy that ended up with Parvo, and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Within a week of adopting her from the shelter, she passed away. The vet tried to save her and couldn’t. Coccidia and Giardia are also diseases that cause bleeding in the stool (usually in diarrhea). There are just so many reason and really a vet would be your best bet. If you are financially strapped, see if there is an organization like the Humanitarians in your area. Your local shelter might have a list of places that could help if you need it. Good luck and I hope all is well soon!
