The monarch “appoints” the PM, so after a brief interim period under a caretaker leader, the party in Government would elect a new leader, who would present himself at Buckingham Palace with the approval of a majority of MPs, and would be invited to form a Government – this all by long standing constitutional convention dating back to eighteenth century, as no PM has died in office for over 100 years
