What would be the advantage of taking Oxycontin vs 7.5/500 Hydrocodone?
Pharmacist here. Difference one, Oxycontin IS a stronger pain reliever, it’s also just one component, where hydrocodone you mention is hydrocodone AND acetaminophen (tylenol). Benefits – oxycontin is a 12-hour sustained release pain reliever, which means long term pain control, only two doses a day. Also, there is no tylenol in it, so no real limit on the dose if you ever need to increase it, where the hydrocodone combinations DO have daily limits. Like I said it’s also more powerful, but there IS a way to convert all morphine derivatives to equivalent doses of another, so if you take enough hydrocodone in a day it might be worth the switch. Downside – higher addiction potential, more controversial, and harder for you as a patient to have filled because it’s in the highest level of control of all prescriptions.
