What would a responsible Republican issues-based agenda look like?
[The issues] must be connected with the priorities of the American public. We do know that Medicare reform, Social Security reform are tops on almost everyody’s list. Education — even though the Republican Party says education is a local issue, we seem to shy away from it. Because we’re in Washington, we think we shouldn’t talk about it. So the Democrats come in and take all the education issues away from us. That alone could move us to the minority party. Tax cuts: I think across-the-board rate reductions in tax cuts is the way to go. Most everybody in this country believes that government is too big. That is what is going to drive our economy and open up more opportunities for young people and ensure economic growth. Foreign policy, trade, national security — all those are issues the American people understand. We should be taking the lead. This guy in the White House today is a disaster in foreign policy.
