What work is the United Nations doing in the Lao PDR?
The main focus of the UN Country Team in the Lao PDR is to support the Government of the Lao PDR to achieve its national development goals, Millennium Development Goals and to exit least developed country (LDC) status by the year 2020. Most recently the UN Country Team developed its five year programme framework (the UNDAF) which organizes the UN system around supporting the Government’s National Socio-Economic Development Plan 2006-2010 (NSEDP). The main activities of the UN system can be described as poverty alleviation, rural development, livelihoods and food security, pro-poor policy reform and institutional strengthening, drug control and opium elimination, preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS, improved health care services and systems, support to children’s well being through improved access education and health, and support to governance reform. The UN system pays important attention to ensuring gender equality with communities they work with as well as in their organizations.
