What words/phrases uses gods name in vain?
Using God’s name in vain (blasphemy) is actually very different than the ‘simple’ cursing as we think of it today. In Biblical times, using God’s name in vain meant swearing an oath before God — and then failing to fulfill the oath, or never intending to fulfill the oath in the first place. For instance, if you had a bill overdue and told the creditor, “I swear to God, I will have it there Thursday morning!” then, you don’t. THAT is using God’s name in vain. What we call that today, in it’s most common usage, is PERJURY. As when you are in courtroom and swear to tell the truth “so help you God”, and then lie.
