First of all, kudos for getting your kids into woodworking. I would teach them as much hand-tool woodworking as you can. It can be done reasonably safely, and they will be much better woodworkers for it. I think the core set of hand tools for any kind of woodworking is something like this: • Bench chisels, 1/8″ – 1″, ideally in 1/8″ increments (although good luck finding a 7/8″…). • A block plane. • A bench plane. • A small backsaw, suitable for dovetailing and other fine work. • A larger pair utility saws for more general work, one crosscut and one rip. • A hand drill and bits. • A brace and bigger bits (perhaps including Forstner bits) • Files and rasps • Cabinet Scrapers/ • Screwdrivers and pliers. • A regular hammer, a carving mallet, and small (~6oz) hammer. • A square • A marking gauge • A marking knife and/or a scratch awl • A straightedge • A tape measure • A workbench with a vise • Clamps (you can never have too many…) • Sharpening gear — coarse and fine stones, water, an
