What will the successor to Windows 98 be called?
That depends on which successor you’re talking about. Microsoft is working on a minor revision to Windows 9x that will ship in 2000, code-named Millennium (think “Windows 98 Third Edition”). This “Consumer Windows” (or whatever it’s called) will be based on the Windows 9x kernel, not the NT kernel used in Windows 2000. A future version of Windows 2000, code-named “Whistler,” will include a consumer edition. Whistler is due in 2001-2002.
