What will happen when a child is abused because a CRB check wasn done?
The government seems to be acting with extra crass stupidity on the CRB checks aspect of this. They want private and voluntary sector organisations to take over the work of many of the public services and at the same time they are leaving it up to employers and organisations to decide whether a wider range of “non-regulated” paid and volunteer roles should be subject to the vetting and barring scheme. If it’s reasonable to assume that the public services will choose to still implement it, and some private and voluntary organisations will take the opportunity to become more lax, are people going to trust them or want to use them? The full range of regulated and non regulated roles have not been published yet, but the Home Office has given the following examples of ones which will not be regulated, i.e. where registration on the vetting and barring scheme will not be compulsory: • Cleaner in an old people’s care home • Sunday school helper • Medicines counter assistant • Volunteer parent
