What will happen to the casks if there is a sizeable earthquake? Will they come open?
Our analysis indicates that in a nearby earthquake, the casks may rock back and forth a bit, tilting as much as 14 inches at the top. Some may even rotate on the bottom rims, the same way a can might, if spun on its rim. The casks will not tip over during an earthquake. Even though this situation cannot occur, the casks have been designed to withstand this event also.
