What will happen to the amounts saved on grant or other non-state accounts?
Principal investigators should be aware that these furlough days will result in unused grant funds. In some cases, these unused grant funds can be used for salary at a later date. Certain grant sponsors will allow these funds to be re-budgeted to a category other than salary without sponsor approval; other grant sponsors may require sponsor approval. Should the furlough requirements take valuable time away from a project such that it cannot be completed as planned, a no-cost extension should be pursued.
