What will happen if the referendum passes?
A. A first step will be the purchase of additional Arlington homes and business sites, providing the needed land to allow for creek widening. Detention ponds will be created along the 11-mile stretch of Johnson Creek, from near The Parks Mall, through Downtown to Randol Mill Road. The purpose of the creek widening and the ponds is to collect flood waters, and slow them down as they travel along the creek. This type of solution allows flood control channels, maintenance paths and detention ponds to double as linear parks, trails and recreational areas open to the public. Another element of the plan is the preservation of some of the city’s last, best natural areas. The plan will preserve these areas while making them accessible to the public. It’s estimated that the entire plan will take 13 years to complete. The Mayor and City Council have set absolute limits of 15 years and 149 million in today’s dollars.
