My least favorite part of going to the movies these days — worse than soda prices, more unnecessary than the three Fandango receipts — is the ads before the ads. A charming voiceover drone (second only to Amtrak’s Julie) attempts to create some narrative around the marketing lead-in to the actual previews, but she can’t stop the fact that no one really gives a damn about, say, ponying up twelve bucks for a one-night-only, celluloid showing of a U2 concert. Except for maybe this guy. And, as it turns out, myself: I woke up this morning to an Outlook reminder on my phone, one I’d clearly dashed off a couple months back before digging into my popcorn — WIZARD OF OZ IN THEATERS… FLOYD? As in, Pink Floyd’s notorious feat of synchronicity — their classic album sharing a heartbeat with the Tin Man and a hundred-odd other Dorothy-related moments — could finally be attempted in a movie theater. You’ll need a pair of decent headphones, of course, and you’ll want to tweak the song-to-song fade
The classic Wizard of Oz film is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the film will be shown on Wednesday, September 23rd at 7pm in hi-def with out-takes, historical interviews, and behind the scenes footage here in Washington at the Mazza Gallerie movie theatre in Friendship Heights. This is a special one-night only event coinciding with showings throughout the U.S. on the same date and time. The Wizard of Oz is a cinematic classic and favorite of tweens and film-goers of all ages. Amazingly it never won an Oscar – which goes to show that awards are not everything. Dorothy’s iconic red slippers, on display here at the Smithsonian, will forever inspire young actresses. The Wizard of Oz continues to delight audiences of all ages and even sparked the girl-power sequel: Wicked (and we love, love, love the message of “defying gravity”!).
