What will be the role of second-generation immigrants in Italian society in the future?
Their destiny is mediated by the institutions which they encounter in the socialising process: family and school. In particular, as a survey carried out by the municipality of Milan in 2003 revealed, among immigration children there is an ambivalent attitude between the will to invest in middle and high school education and the need to give their contribution to their families, by working alongside their parents (subordinate work, cleaning, nursing, maintenance) from adolescence. Recent studies reveal that second generation minors will hit one million in 10 years. Every year, the growth rate is 20% higher than the previous one. In 2004-2005, students of foreign origin were 361,576, amounting to 4.2% of the total school population. Emilia Romagna is the Italian region with the highest density of foreigners totalling 8.4%, and Milan is the first among region capitals with 11.6%.
