The role of GPVEC is critical to the success of the cooperative UNL-ISU DVM program. The true benefits of the partnership in preparing food animal veterinarians is the relationship with animal science in the basic science courses of the first two years, as well as the integration of the GPVEC into the four-year curriculum. Faculty at GPVEC strongly support the use of UNL facilities for the first two years curriculum because greater opportunity exists here to include live animals (livestock and other) in those classes than is currently accommodated at ISU. Incorporation of food animal-based courses in nutrition and metabolism, reproductive physiology, etc., would differentiate this program from other colleges of veterinary medicine. Within the clinical curriculum, there is great opportunity for synergism in the delivery of the food/production animal medicine courses.
